Illinois Income Tax Hike?

(Chicago, IL) — Crain’s GREG HINZ reports that sources close to Senate President EMIL JONES (D-Chicago) say he’s willing to consider an income tax hike this year.

House Speaker MICHAEL MADIGAN (D-Chicago) already is on record supporting an income tax income increase.

Governor ROD BLAGOJEVICH has made opposition to income or sales increases his signature position. Would the Senate President abandon his ally on the tax question? He did, initially, on the final budget deal last year. Maybe this year, too.

  2. Does anyone know when was the last time the state of Illinois raised its income tax?

  3. Every time we turn around, someone wants to raise my taxes. When does it stop? With the current political attitudes in this state, the answer seems to be after they have squeezed every penny from hardworking people to benefit those who lean on the system. My taxes to pay someone else’s day care? If you can’t afford the bills associated with having children, don’t have children. I don’t expect others to pay MY bills.

  4. Dear Taxed,

Part of “leaning on the system” also includes people who send their kids to public schools.

You can imagine how annoyed childless individuals become when they pay taxes for public schools because of parents who “lean on the system”. Many agree with you. Public school parents should quit “leaning on the system” and instead send their kids to private schools. If parents can’t afford to educate their children, they shouldn’t have children–right?

  5. I believe childless individuals went to public schools, or could have gone to public schools, themselves. Also, childless individuals will someday claim social security which will be paid for by the people educated in public schools.
However, it is a bit much to pay for other types of entitlements such as day care, ugly unsalable art, services for illegals….the list goes on. Why doesn’t the state start cutting those programs and then go to the voters begging for money?

  6. Dear Lee,

You don’t get the point. Public schools–like day care–are entitlements for people parents who can’t afford privately paid services. If you can’t pay for your kids education, day care, health care–then don’t have kids, right? You can’t cherry pick and be consistent.

But whoever said ignorance had to be consistent, I guess.
