(Springfield, IL) — March 25, 2010. The Illinois Senate today today overwhelmingly approved legislation that eliminates the residency requirement for Chicago Public School teachers.
The Senate voted 40-7 for the measure, Senate Bill 3522, which also eliminates residency within the district from being considered as a factor in determining compensation, retention, promotion, assignment, or transfer of a teacher.
State Senator Heather Steans (D-Chicago) championed the legislation.
The bill now moves to the Illinois House where State Rep. Kevin Joyce (D-Chicago) is the chief sponsor.

How could they expect to get good teachers when they lock them into a Chicago residency? They don’t require this from special ed teachers because they need them. This residency requirement for teachers is hurting the students and punishing the teachers. Shame on Chicago polititians who try to make people live in a city that they do not want to live in. Hyde Park High School had several classes with no teachers for months, and they are going to try to limit their teaching pool?
