(Springfield, IL) — February 14, 2011. House Speaker Michael Madigan (D-Chicago) has gotten behind Senate President John Cullerton‘s legislative effort to oust appointees of ex-Governor Rod Blagojevich or Governor Pat Quinn whose terms have expired or whose appointment has not received the consent of the senate.
Madigan today assumed chief sponsorship of the legislation, Senate Bill 1, which just arrived arrived in the House on February 10 after winning senate approval 48-0.
Currently, there are more than 500 appointees serving in expired terms of whom 36 were appointed by Quinn in his first term but were not confirmed by the Senate. If the legislation becomes law with Quinn’s signature or over his veto, the 500 would be forced from office.
“It’s meant to correct what we see as a loophole in the law,” said Cullerton.
House Majority Leader Barbara Flynn Currie (D-Chicago) is the co-chief sponsor of the measure.
