Illinois Democrats, GOP Roll Out New Legislative Maps

(Springfield, IL) — May 26, 2011. With the clock ticking-and-tocking toward the legislature’s adjournment on May 31, Illinois Democratic and Republican lawmakers put new Illinois legislative maps into play today.

After a week of public review, comment and recommendations, Illinois Senate Redistricting Chairman Kwame Raoul (D-Chicago) today released adjustments to the legislative redistricting proposal unveiled on Thursday, May 19.
The revised Democratic maps came after public hearings in Chicago and Springfield .

“The adjusted boundaries we’re releasing today aim to address many of the recommendations brought to our attention during the public review process,” Raoul said.

The adjusted proposal can be accessed at either www.ilsenateredistricting.com.

Meanwhile, Illinois Republicans today finally released their proposed map.

Compared to the Democrats’ map, the GOP plan creates two additional Latino districts and enhances and equalizes Latino voters in other districts, and it also creates two more majority African-American districts than the proposed Democrat map, according to Illinois Senate Minority Leader Christine Radogno (R-Lemont).

“Our goal throughout this process has been a Fair Map that complies with the Illinois Constitution and the applicable laws, including the federal Voting Rights Act,” said Radogno.

It is expected, of course, that the Democratic-controlled legislature will approve the Democratic version and send to Governor Pat Quinn, a Chicago Democrat.
