Boilermakers Back Kenny Johnson over Christian Mitchell in Illinois House Democratic Primary

(Chicago, IL) – February 27, 2012. The International Brotherhood of Boilermakers Local 1 has endorsed Kenny Johnson over Christian Mitchell in the Democratic primary for the seat once held by now-Chicago 4th Ward Alderman Will Burns.

“Kenny Johnson has been and will continue to be a strong advocate for working families and neighborhoods,” said John Skermont, Business Manager of the Boilermakers Local 1.  “We are proud to give our emphatic support to Kenny Johnson and his campaign.”

Boilermakers Local 1 has hundreds of active and retired members who reside in the district, according to Skermont.

The Boilermakers’ endorsement reinforces Johnson’s solid backing from organized labor, which includes: Illinois Federation of Teachers, AFSCME Council 31, the Chicago Teachers Union, the Laborers’ Local 1001, and the Cook County College Teachers Union.

Johnson is also backed by U.S. Rep. Jesse Jackson, Jr. In turn, Mitchell is supported by Cook County Board President Toni Preckwickle. The race viewed by many observers as political proxy battle between Jackson and Preckwinkle.

The seat is currently held by State Rep. Kim DuBuclet (D-Chicago), who was appointed this past spring to replace Burns. DuBuclet is not seeking reelection.
